PMAANZ Matters – e-Newsletter September 2026
A word from the Secretary

With heartfelt thanks to our PMAANZ members
As I come to the end of my three years as Secretary of PMAANZ, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank our members and exec team, for your support, encouragement, and contribution over this time. It has been a real privilege to serve in this role, to represent our members, and to be part of an organisation that continues to advocate for practice managers, administrators, and health care leaders across Aotearoa.
Our work is not always visible, and at times our profession can feel undervalued or unheard. Yet every day, our members carry enormous responsibility within general practices and health care services. We are often the people holding together the many moving parts, the workforce, the patients, the finances, the compliance, the relationships, the systems, and the constant change that comes with working in health.
Over the past three years I have had the privilege of connecting with many like-minded people who understand what it truly takes to run general practice and health care services in Aotearoa. Those conversations have strengthened my belief that, when we come together as a collective, our voice does hold mana. We have knowledge, experience, and insight that must be part of the wider health conversation, including in the political arena where decisions are made that affect our practices, our teams, and our communities.
PMAANZ has an important role in informing, guiding, connecting, influencing, inspiring, and supporting the growth of our members, and I have been proud to contribute to that work as part of the Executive. Our association exists because practice management matters. Our roles matter. Our practices matter. And the communities we serve matter.
We need to continue being the squeaky wheel. We need to keep speaking up, sharing our experience, challenging decisions when they do not reflect the reality on the ground, and reminding others that strong, sustainable health care services rely on strong practice management. We know what it takes because we live it every day.
Although I am stepping down from the Executive, I am not stepping away from the kaupapa. I will continue to be a voice for our members whenever I can, and I look forward to staying connected with as many of you as possible in the coming years through PMAANZ events, branch gatherings, conferences, and the friendships and professional networks that make this association so special.
Thank you for trusting me, supporting me, and walking alongside me over the past three years. It has been an honour to serve, and I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to have represented such a dedicated, knowledgeable, and resilient group of people.
“Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa mō tō koutou tautoko me tō koutou manaaki. Ahakoa e wehe ana ahau i tēnei tūranga, ehara tēnei i te poroporoaki whakamutunga. Ka kite anō.”
Thank you all for your support and kindness. Although I am leaving this role, this is not a final goodbye. I will see you again.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week)

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) will be celebrated from 14 to 20 September 2026, with this year's theme encouraging communities, workplaces, and organisations across Aotearoa to embrace and strengthen the use of te reo Māori in everyday life.
For practice managers, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori offers an opportunity to reflect on how language contributes to creating welcoming, culturally safe healthcare environments.
The use of te reo Māori in general practice doesn't require fluency. Simple actions such as greeting patients with "Kia ora", using bilingual signage, learning a few healthcare-related words, or incorporating te reo Māori into meetings and communications can help patients and whānau feel acknowledged and respected.
Research and experience continue to show that when people feel culturally safe and connected, engagement with healthcare services improves. As leaders within our practices, we are well placed to foster environments where Māori patients, whānau, staff, and communities feel seen, heard, and valued.
Ideas for Your Practice
- During Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, consider
- Starting staff meetings with a simple mihi or whakataukī.
- Introducing a "Kupu o te Rā" (Word of the Day).
- Using bilingual email signatures.
- Displaying bilingual posters and signage. [tetaurawhiri.govt.nz], [assets.nat...uilder.com]
- Encouraging staff to learn and use basic greetings and phrases.
- Recognising and celebrating the diverse cultures within your practice team and community.
- Sharing local iwi history or stories relevant to your area.
A Journey, not a Destination
Many people are hesitant to use te reo Māori because they are worried about making mistakes. However, language revitalisation is strengthened when everyone is prepared to learn, practise, and participate.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori reminds us that every word spoken, every greeting shared, and every effort to engage contributes to a future where te reo Māori is heard, valued, and normalised across Aotearoa.
As practice managers, our leadership can help create workplaces where both staff and patients feel supported to embrace and celebrate the richness of te reo Māori.
"Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini."
Success is not the work of one, but the work of many
Kia kaha te reo Māori
A word from the Chair

Kia ora PMAANZ Members
It's been a full few months since our last newsletter and PMAANZ's presence across the primary care sector has only kept building. Between the July funding changes, ongoing cyber security requirements, and the day-to-day pressures our members are managing in practice, it's more important than ever that Practice Managers have a strong, consistent voice in the rooms where these decisions get made — and that's exactly where I've been spending my time as your Chair.
Keeping PMAANZ at the table
We've continued our regular seat at the General Practice Leaders Forum (GPLF), both by Zoom and in person, alongside RNZCGP, Hauora Taiwhenua, GenPro, GPNZ and NZNO — advocacy with Health NZ and the Minister remains the collective's key focus. This includes returning to the regular meetings with the Minister that we enjoyed pre-covid. We had a successful initial meeting with Minister Brown at his Parliamentary office earlier in August and look forward to hearing more from him at PMAANZ26.
I've also attended GPNZ Executive meetings and Members Forums, representing roughly 80% of PHOs that GPNZ brings together, plus quarterly RNZCGP MOU meetings.
On top of these, PMAANZ has kept contributing to the ACC Primary Care Sector Engagement Group and External Reference Group, quarterly Primary Care Sector meetings, and — new this quarter — the Ministry of Health's Cyber Awareness working group and the HNZ Cyber Incident Response Project, reflecting how much cyber resilience is now a live issue for practices.
Every one of these forums is an opportunity to make sure the practical realities of running a general practice — not just the policy theory — shape what comes next. It's encouraging to keep seeing the expertise Practice Managers bring recognised at that level.
GP26
Jen and I represented PMAANZ as exhibitors at GP26 in Auckland. Engagement at the stand itself was modest, due to mostly GP attendance. We had some good conversations with several delegates. Given the political significance of this conference and its attendees, it is important for PMAANZ to be visible there as an organisation.
Conference Update
With less than a month to go before PMAANZ26 in Wellington we are on track for an engaging and informative programme which I'm genuinely excited to share with you. If you are attending, please make time to chat to our sponsors and exhibitors, without their support we would not be able to have such a successful conference.
As part of PMAANZ26 we will also be awarding Practice Management of the Year and have been overwhelmed with the volume and standard of applications. All of the entrants have shown amazing support for the practices and patients.
AGM
Our AGM is coming up, and preparation is well underway. Please keep an eye out for the information pack together with the proposed Motions and email the Chair or the Secretary with any questions you may have. Please consider a proxy vote if you can't join us in person.
Farewell to Carole
I would like to take this opportunity to officially say farewell to our admin extraordinaire, Carole Unkovich. She has been a valued member of the PMAANZ Executive for several years and has managed to keep PMAANZ running smoothly, corralling the Executive when needed. All the best for your new role, Carole — you and your support will be missed. Please be patient with the Executive as we work to fill Carole's role; it's not an easy one to step into.
Thank you all for the work you do every day for your practices and your teams. I look forward to catching up with many of you soon — whether that's at conference or online at the AGM.
Ngā mihi nui,
Mary Morrissey | Chair PMAANZ

Celebrating Our 2026 Practice Management of the Year Applicants
Each year, the PMAANZ Practice Management of the Year Award recognises individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership, innovation, community impact, and commitment to excellence in healthcare management. This year we were delighted to receive applications from an exceptional group of healthcare leaders whose contributions continue to strengthen primary care across Aotearoa New Zealand. Meet our four nominees!
Mandy Barrow – Mapua General Practice Ltd (Mandy is front and centre with the brown dress)

Under Mandy's leadership, Mapua Health has achieved significant milestones including the successful implementation of a new practice management system, Cornerstone Accreditation, and continuous quality improvements that have enhanced patient care and organisational performance. Mandy's commitment to staff wellbeing, professional development, and patient-centred care has fostered a positive workplace culture and strengthened health outcomes within her community, including notable improvements in cervical screening participation for Māori and Pasifika patients.
Priscilla Lutui – The Fono Manurewa Healthcare Centre

Priscilla has demonstrated remarkable leadership in driving transformational change within Manurewa Healthcare Centre. Through innovative use of data, service redesign, and a strong focus on equity, she has helped improve patient access, reduce waiting times, increase engagement with support services, and enhance patient experience. Her contribution to establishing the Mobile Medical Unit and expanding digital access for patients highlights her commitment to meeting communities where they are and improving health outcomes for those most in need.
Rebecca Townsend – Whangamatā Medical Centre

Rebecca's leadership has been tested through some of the most challenging circumstances, guiding her rural practice through major weather events while ensuring continuity of care for her community. Beyond emergency preparedness, she has championed workforce development, patient support initiatives, innovative clinical services, and community partnerships that reduce barriers to healthcare access. Her dedication to both patients and staff has helped create a resilient and responsive practice that continues to thrive.
Roslyn Bresnahan – Mission Bay Doctors-Remuera Doctors-Freemand Bay Medical Centre

Roslyn has been recognised by her colleagues as an outstanding leader whose compassion, professionalism, and people-focused approach have been instrumental in supporting multiple practices through significant growth and change. She is highly regarded for fostering an inclusive, supportive workplace culture while ensuring staff remain engaged, informed, and empowered. Her commitment to equity, innovation, and exceptional patient care has made a lasting impact across her organisation and community.
The calibre of this year's applicants reflects the extraordinary talent, dedication, and leadership within our profession. PMAANZ extends its sincere congratulations to all nominees for their commitment to advancing primary healthcare and supporting their teams and communities.
The 2026 Practice Management of the Year Award winner will be announced at the PMAANZ Conference, where we will celebrate and recognise outstanding achievement in practice management across New Zealand.
Proudly Sponsored by MAS
This prestigious award is proudly sponsored by Medical Assurance Society (MAS), one of PMAANZ's valued and long-standing sponsors. We sincerely thank MAS for their ongoing support of the practice management profession and their commitment to recognising excellence in primary healthcare leadership.
The Practice of 2030: What Changes, and What Doesn't
Healthcare is under pressure, and practice management sits at the centre of it. At this year's PMAANZ conference, Medtech Global's Jakub Jurkiewicz, Chief Product and Technology Officer, and Chrissie Patterson, General Manager of Product and Delivery, take an honest look at the structural shifts reshaping general practice across New Zealand and Australia over the next five years.
From workforce change and rising cost pressures to the real impact of AI on clinical workflows, this plenary session explores what's actually changing, what isn't, and what the practices getting it right are doing today. Jakub and Chrissie make the case that practice managers, not GPs, not vendors, are the decisive factor in whether AI restores time to patients or becomes another failed rollout.
Grounded in industry research, and real capability rather than hype, the session closes with a vision of an opportunity ahead: a practice where the paperwork is handled, the team goes home on time, and the consultation belongs to the patient again.
Jakub brings over 20 years in software engineering, AI and digital health product leadership; Chrissie brings 22+ years spanning QA, delivery, and product at Medtech. Join the conversation live or continue it at the Medtech Global stand.
Medical Protection Society
MPS is immensely proud to be a Gold Sponsor at the 2026 PMAANZ Conference, recognising the contribution that Practice Managers make to primary healthcare in New Zealand. Through our support of PMAANZ, we support you.
MPS values the role of Practice Manager as being a very key and pivotal role in Practice, and we see first-hand just how hard you work - we know how you juggle a thousand different areas of responsibility at work.
We hope this Conference will provide you with valuable learnings and ideas, along with the opportunity to connect and enjoy the company of your colleagues and peers. Have a wonderful weekend!
Collaborative Aotearoa update: Change, growth and looking ahead
The past three months have been a period of change, growth, and transition for Collaborative Aotearoa. A milestone for our organisation has been the successful leadership transition to Interim Chief Executive, Ny Brunenberg, supported by the dedication of our staff | kaimahi. We've also welcomed Ali Wilden (WellSouth PHO) and Renee Ward (Marlborough Primary Health) into part-time secondment roles, bringing valuable primary care expertise to support delivery of our 2026 – 2027 Annual Work Plan. We are grateful to both organisations for enabling these contributions to our shared kaupapa of improving health and hauora outcomes for whānau across Aotearoa.
As we move through the second half of 2026, several key pieces of work continue to gain momentum.
Six months in: strong early results from Health Coach training
One of the highlights has been reaching the six-month milestone of the PREKURE and Collaborative Aotearoa Integrated Primary Mental Health and Addiction (IPMHA) Health Coach Training Programme. Three cohorts are now underway, with 34 health coaches enrolled and no withdrawals once a cohort has commenced.
The early results are encouraging. 100% of respondents reported increased confidence in their health coaching skills following the two-day intensive, with average confidence increasing from 2.3/5 to 4.2/5.
"Being new to the role, I feel this is going to set me up for success, whereas before the training, I felt a bit lost and unsure." – Cohort 1 Health Coach.
A consistent theme emerging from learner feedback is the value of practical, workplace-focused learning. Live coaching demonstrations, role-play activities, peer feedback, and practical coaching tools are helping participants build the confidence and capability to apply a health coaching approach in real-world settings.
The training is also supported by a growing workforce infrastructure, including a national Regional Lead network providing mentoring and assessment closer to where Health Coaches work, and an established pathway to the NZQA Level 4 Health Coach Preparation Micro-credential for early cohorts.
For practices considering recruiting new health coaches, or for organisations wanting to further develop existing staff, we encourage you to explore the available training pathways and resources. The programme continues to evolve in response to employer and workforce needs, with options available for both new and experienced health coaches.
Enrolment is open for Cohort 5 (starts 14 September 2026), and Cohort 6 (starts 2 November 2026). Visit: IPMHA Health Coach Training | PREKURE & Collaborative NZ.
Prescriber-led clinical triage toolkit available nationally until November 2026
Another exciting development has been the national release of the Prescriber-Led Clinical Triage Toolkit.
Funded by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, the toolkit has been developed to support practices implementing clinical triage models that improve access to general practice while making the best use of multidisciplinary team capacity.
The toolkit provides a team-wide practical implementation guidance, resources, and lessons learned from practices that have already introduced prescriber-led clinical triage approaches. The aim is to support practices to enhance access, improve patient flow, and create more sustainable ways of working for busy general practice teams.
Importantly, the toolkit is currently available as an open-source resource. We encourage practice managers and clinical leaders to download and access these resources while they remain publicly available, as open access is scheduled to conclude in November 2026. Download the Toolkit for free: Clinical Triage Pou Ora Toolkit | Collaborative Aotearoa.
See you at PMAANZ 2026 Conference - Wellington
Finally, if you're attending the PMAANZ 2026 Conference in Wellington next month, we'd love to meet you. The Collaborative Aotearoa team will be exhibiting at Stand 15. Whether you'd like to learn more about our programmes, membership, workforce development initiatives, resources, or simply have a kōrero about what's happening in primary care, please come and say hello.
We always value the opportunity to hear directly from practice managers about the challenges, opportunities, and innovations happening across the country. Your insights help shape the work we do and ensure our programmes remain grounded in the realities of frontline primary care.

PMAANZ Conference 2026 – We’re Almost There!
The countdown is officially on!
It’s hard to believe that after months of planning, organising, phone calls, emails, speaker wrangling and plenty of behind-the-scenes mahi, PMAANZ Conference 2026 is almost here!
From 17–19 September, we’ll be bringing our PMAANZ community together at the iconic Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara for what promises to be an incredibly special few days.
This year’s conference is all about connection, learning, inspiration and celebrating the important work we do every day as practice managers and administrators across Aotearoa.
Something for everyone
We’ve worked hard to create a programme that is not only interesting and informative, but also relevant to the realities of our roles.
Our profession continues to change rapidly. We are juggling people, patients, technology, compliance, finances, workforce challenges and the ever-growing expectations placed on healthcare practices. Sometimes it can feel like there simply aren’t enough hours in the day!
That’s why conference is so important.
It gives us the opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, take a breath, learn something new and, perhaps most importantly, talk to people who genuinely understand what we do.
Whether you are a long-standing PMAANZ member, a first-time conference attendee, a practice manager, administrator or someone new to the profession, there will be something for you.
Come for the learning – stay for the connections
One of the things I love most about our PMAANZ conferences is the opportunity to connect with colleagues from around the country.
We all have our own stories, challenges and experiences, but there is something incredibly reassuring about sitting around a table with people who get it.
There will be plenty of opportunities to share ideas, swap stories, ask questions, meet new people and catch up with old friends.
And, of course, there will be our wonderful exhibitors and sponsors who play such an important role in making our conference possible. Please take the time to visit them, have a chat and discover what they can offer your practice.
A few days to invest in YOU
As practice managers and administrators, we spend so much of our time looking after everyone else.
Conference is your chance to invest in yourself.
Come along ready to learn, laugh, be challenged, be inspired and perhaps even take away a few ideas that make life back in your practice just a little easier.
And don’t underestimate the value of simply having a few days away from your desk!
Wellington, here we come!
The Michael Fowler Centre is a fantastic venue, and Wellington is the perfect backdrop for our 2026 conference.
So, whether you are travelling from Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, the South Island or anywhere in between – we can’t wait to welcome you to Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
The team has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes, and we are now counting down the days until we can finally see everything come together.
PMAANZ Conference 2026 is almost here – and we can’t wait to share it with you!
If you haven’t registered yet, now is the time to get organised. Gather your team, book your travel and accommodation, and get ready for a few days of learning, connection and plenty of fun.

We’ll see you there!
A word from our Treasurer

Greetings to you all
Thank you to everyone who took the time out of their busy schedules to complete our biennial remuneration survey. We are just putting the final touches on this and hope to get the results out the first week of September so you can digest this prior to conference.
A common theme in the survey is that practice management is a challenging but rewarding job and PMAANZ provides a vital role in supporting and encouraging members, along with ensuring they are receiving important information about funding and other changes within the health sector. We hope that you get value out of the survey and that you can use it within your work environment to negotiate a fair and reasonable package for the hard work that you do.
It has been an interesting few months with a new "national" PHO on the scene, shaking things up a bit and encouraging way more transparency. It will be interesting to watch the PHO space over the next year particularly as this is a transition year for funding with practices who have made the switch, having to work with two PHO's through to 30 June 2027.
In the finance space it has been great to see an increase in income and a reduction in expenditure in the PMAANZ books as we work hard on achieving a financially sustainable model. I will talk to this more during the AGM so I encourage you to attend and if you are unable to, please take the time to read the AGM pack and send any questions you may have prior to the meeting on 9 September.
Politically, health has been a hot topic, particularly as we head towards the election. On the positive side, at least health is being talked about and is a key issue for government and is getting a lot of media attention. Hopefully this translates into funding in the right place at the right time so that patients benefit.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the conference this year. Hopefully the Wellington weather behaves, and we don't all get blown away.
Wendy Harris
Treasurer
A word from Communications

Tēnā koutou katoa,
Well, I’m sitting here in the dining area with the sun streaming down on my shoulders, thinking what an amazing day it is here in little ol’ Bulls!
This year has been full of communication from Health New Zealand, as well as PMAANZ, and there certainly has been plenty to keep us all informed and on our toes.
Influenza B, RSV and the common cold have been hitting the area with great force. Most of us have probably been extremely busy at work, covering for staff, supporting our teams and juggling all the many demands that come with being a Practice Manager. It’s certainly a role that keeps us busy!
I hope you are all keeping safe and well and, most importantly, looking after yourselves. Please remember to take some time for you. It’s easy to put ourselves last when there are so many people relying on us, but our own wellbeing is just as important.
The PMAANZ Executive Team has been working incredibly hard this year to keep everyone informed and up to date with the many changes taking place across our sector.
As you may all be aware, our lovely Carole Unkovich has taken on a new role and will no longer be our administrator. Carole, we wish you all the very best in your new venture and thank you for everything you have done for PMAANZ.
The Executive Team is now in the process of looking for a new Carole — which will certainly be a hard act to follow! Please be patient with us during this transition, as we are all working full-time while also taking on some new tasks.
I am really looking forward to catching up with everyone at conference. It seems such a long time since we have all been together. We have some amazing speakers lined up, and some of you may even take the opportunity to enjoy the World of WearableArt while you are in Wellington.
A little about me
I’ve been kept busy this year working through the Foundation Standards, CQI and Equity modules. I have now been assessed and am waiting for the RNZCGP to give us the tick of approval!
As you will all know, getting everything in order for assessment can be quite a process — making sure all your ducks are in a row takes time and effort. I’m very pleased that I now have a little more time to relax and enjoy some downtime.
Work-wise, we have been busy, as I’m sure many of you have been too. It seems there is never a dull moment in general practice!
Life outside work
On a personal note, my husband and I have been enjoying some mini-breaks, travelling around the North Island in our caravan. I must admit, we are very spoilt with the amazing sights we get to see along the way.
Every town and city we visit seems to have something different to offer, along with plenty of lovely people to meet. I particularly enjoy people-watching and simply wandering around and exploring each new area.
It’s a wonderful way to unwind, recharge the batteries and appreciate some of the beautiful places we have right here in Aotearoa.
I look forward to seeing many of you at conference and having the opportunity to catch up, share stories and enjoy some time together.
Take care, look after yourselves, and see you all soon!

A word from Membership

Kia ora everyone,
Winter has definitely made itself known this year. The chilly mornings, frosty days, and all those winter bugs seem to have kept everyone on their toes.
Like many communities around Aotearoa, we've seen plenty of coughs, colds, and seasonal viruses doing the rounds. Our teams have been busy supporting whānau and making sure people can get the care they need. It's been a good reminder for all of us to look after ourselves, keep warm, rest when we're unwell, and check in on friends and family who might need a little extra support.
We were pleased to know that our Practice received additional funding from TWO. This was good news and will help us continue strengthening the services we provide. The funding will support initiatives that improve access to care, help our workforce, and allow us to respond more effectively to the needs of our communities.
We're especially excited about the PMAANZ Conference in Wellington in September. It's always one of the highlights of our calendar and a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, share ideas, learn from one another, and celebrate the incredible work happening across healthcare.
There is something really special about bringing people together from across the motu who are all passionate about improving health outcomes for our communities. We're looking forward to the conversations, the inspiration, the networking, and of course catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones along the way.
With so much happening across the sector, this year's Conference promises to be an energising and valuable event. We can't wait to see everyone in Wellington and spend time together reflecting on our achievements, tackling challenges, and exploring opportunities for the future.
Stay warm, stay well, and start packing your bags for Wellington. We're counting down the days and looking forward to what promises to be an outstanding PMAANZ Conference this year.

Auckland branch update

Auckland Branch Update
What a fantastic evening we had at our PMAANZ Auckland Branch Mid-Winter Dinner! It was wonderful to see members come together for a relaxed evening of good food, great conversation and plenty of laughs. Events like these are a great opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, catch up with familiar faces and connect with other practice managers from across the region.
A big thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the evening such a success. We are looking forward to continuing to create opportunities throughout the year for members to connect, share ideas and support one another.
PMAANZ Conference Dinner – Wellington
We are also looking forward to bringing our members together for the PMAANZ Conference Dinner in Wellington on Friday 18 September. RECIPES
Karen – Communications - RECIPE
Gluten Free Seed Crackers
Ingredients
1/3 cup sesame seeds
½ cup flaxseeds. (for those that don’t know this is linseed)
½ cup raw pumpkin seeds /pepitas
½ cup sunflower seeds
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1/3 cup cornstarch
½ teaspoon salt
3 ½ tablespoons canola oil
¾ cup boiling water
Flaky sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
1 Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F line a 13 x 18 rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside Stir the seeds, cornstarch and salt together in a large bowl. Add the oil and boiling water. Stir to combine. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes.
2 Spread the batter into a thin layer on top of the parchment paper (a small offset spatula really helps this along). Sprinkle the top with sea salt.
Transfer to the oven and bake for about 90 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Rotating the sheep pan as necessary to encourage even browning. Once it is cool enough to handle, move parchment paper with the cracker on top to a wire rack to cool completely. To serve, break the crispbread into pieced for a rustic look or cut into squares using a serrated knife. (I cut with knife before I cook)
